14 Amazing Things That Newborn Babies Can Do, And What They Cannot

It is an exciting time for new parents when their newborn arrives into this world. They may seem vulnerable, and they are, but there are a couple of amazing things that newborns can do, much to the delightful amusement of many people.

Crib Guard

Healthy newborns can typically do the following at birth or within the first few weeks of their life:

Crib Guard

1. See things 8-12 inches away (the distance from breast or milk bottle to mom's or dad's face).

2. Can hear and may move their heads and eyes towards something of interest, or move their heads if their breathing is blocked (but sometimes not enough to avert suffocation).

3. Can identify their parents' voices.

4. Can taste and smell and have shown preferences for their own mother's milk and dislikes for strong, nasty odors.

5. Can draw back when pinched or pricked.

6. Can yawn and sneeze.

7. Have a "startle reflex," in which the arms and legs may shoot out or their body may stiffen when startled by a loud noise or other stimulation.

8. Have a "rooting reflex," in which touching the baby's lips gets him or her to open its mouth for feeding, perhaps smacking lips, sucking and breathing eagerly.

9. Have a protective reflex in which their tongues thrust out any item in their mouths (such as pacifiers). This reflex is intended to guard them against choking.

10. Have a "stepping reflex" if held upright and a "crawling reflex," in which they seem to sort-of crawl when placed on their stomach.

11. Have a "grasping reflex," in which they squeeze their little hands around a finger or other object.

12. Have a "righting reflex," in which when pulled up by the arms, they can lift their head up, despite a floppy neck.

13. Get a big kick out of faces, their own or other people's, and may be able to mimic expressions a few days after birth.

14. Favor the contrast of black-and-white patterns, especially the edges and in the shapes of bulls-eyes, diagonal stripes, faces or checkerboards.

Having listed the amazing things newborns can do, it is usually too much to expect of babies one month or younger to do everything. These are the things they cannot do, and when to expect them:

1. Smile intentionally (this takes about six weeks, although parents often swear it's sooner).

2. See very far away (you'll observe as baby's eyes begin to focus further away).

3. Lift head up (perhaps a bit by end of month, but little neck control yet).

4. Sit unaided when put down in sitting position (at about 5-6 months age).

5. Eat any solids, and will choke if given them (feeding solids sometimes starts at about 4 or 5 months).

6. Drool (drooling may start at about 3 months).

7. Have teeth (rarely a newborn is born with a tooth, but most infants get first teeth at 4-12 months).

8. Grip, pick up or grab objects (by 6 months, however, you may be wishing for a baby straitjacket at the grocery store).

9. Beg, whine and cry for heavily advertised toys.

10. Watch TV.

Now that you know what to expect (or not) of your baby, it's time to enjoy these little moments with your newborn.

Armageddon - What the Bible Says

Through the centuries, the human race has been fascinated with the concept of Armageddon. During that time, the word has been separated from its original biblical context. The true meaning of Armageddon has been replaced by the secular concept of humanity destroying itself. The word is now synonymous with nuclear war, natural disasters, impact from a comet or an asteroid, and any number of creatively conjured existential threats. Yet, the bible doesn't connect a single one of these events with Armageddon.

Crib Guard

Even a majority of devout Christians hold erroneous beliefs about Armageddon. Many correctly view Armageddon as the gathering place of the Antichrist and his armies prior to the Glorious Appearing of Jesus Christ, but they misinterpret the motive of this gathering. A commonly held belief is that these armies gather together at or near Armageddon in order to do battle with each other, or to annihilate the Jewish people. Then, only through the physical intervention of Jesus Christ is humanity saved from either destroying all life or the Jewish people.

Crib Guard

But neither of these motives is correct. The Bible clearly states why these armies gather together at Armageddon, and once we realize why, it's easy to see why most Christians find it difficult to believe.

What Does the Bible Say?

The biblical concept of Armageddon is first introduced by name in the Book of Revelation:

"And they gathered all the rulers and their armies to a place called Armageddon in Hebrew." Revelation 16:16 (NLT)

Armageddon is the Hebrew name of a geographical location in Israel known as Megiddo. Megiddo is a hill which overlooks the Jezreel valley. It is here where, in the last days, Satan and the Antichrist will gather the world's rulers for battle. As previously stated, a common misconception is that they gather together to make war against each other. But the passage never says this, and further examination of the context in which this event transpires will make it clear that this is not their motive.

Remember, in the last days, the Antichrist will be ruler over the entire globe:

"And he was given authority to rule over every tribe and people and language and nation." Revelation 13:7 (NLT)

The Antichrist will also be a popular ruler, worshipped for his awesome power:

"They worshiped the dragon for giving the beast such power, and they worshiped the beast. 'Is there anyone as great as the beast?' they exclaimed. 'Who is able to fight against him?'" Revelation 13:4 (NLT)

In addition, the Antichrist will have total control over the purchase and sale of all goods:

"He required everyone - great and small, rich and poor, slave and free - to be given a mark on the right hand or on the forehead. And no one could buy or sell anything without that mark, which was either the name of the beast or the number representing his name." Revelation 13:16-17 (NLT)

With complete political, religious, and economic power, what army could or would gather for war against the Antichrist? In fact, Revelation 13:4 poses this very question: "Who is able to fight against him?" The bible is clear that the armies at Armageddon do not gather to fight each other. Instead, they are united against a common enemy.

If this is true, who do these armies gather against? The answer can be found throughout the scriptures, beginning with one of the most overlooked prophecies of the bible. Almost everyone can recount the story that led to this prophecy, yet very few remember the prophecy itself.

The Tower of Babel Prophecy

In Genesis Chapter 11, we learn the story of the Tower of Babel:

"At one time the whole world spoke a single language and used the same words. As the people migrated eastward, they found a plain in the land of Babylonia and settled there. They began to talk about construction projects. 'Come,' they said, 'let's make great piles of burnt brick and collect natural asphalt to use as mortar. Let's build a great city with a tower that reaches to the skies - a monument to our greatness! This will bring us together and keep us from scattering all over the world.'

But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. 'Look!' he said. 'If they can accomplish this when they have just begun to take advantage of their common language and political unity, just think of what they will do later. Nothing will be impossible for them! Come, let's go down and give them different languages. Then they won't be able to understand each other.'

In that way, the Lord scattered them all over the earth; and that ended the building of the city. That is why the city was called Babel, because it was there that the Lord confused the people by giving them many languages, thus scattering them across the earth." Genesis 11:1-9 (NLT)

In the sixth verse, God specifically states his reason for scattering the human race and confusing them with different languages. He wants to avoid the inevitable disaster wrought by global government and a common language. Why do these things concern Him? Because if they continue unabated, in due time, "nothing will be impossible for them!" This should be viewed as more than a passing comment by God. It should be interpreted as a prophecy of things to come. And in the last days, mankind will fulfill all the requirements of this prophecy. They will have:

Political Unity

"And he was given authority to rule over every tribe and people and language and nation." Revelation 13:7 (NLT)

United Purpose

"They worshiped the dragon for giving the beast such power, and they worshiped the beast." Revelation 13:4 (NLT)

The global government featured in the Book of Revelation will unify humanity politically for the first time since the days of ancient Babylonia. Thousands of years after God put a stop to this act of monumental arrogance, humanity will once again establish a unified political structure under the rule of the Antichrist.

So what does this mean? What will happen as a result of this global government? Something so bad, God put a stop to it the moment He saw it happening. The human race will directly challenge God. After all, what was the motive in building the Tower of Babel?

"Let's build a great city with a tower that reaches to the skies - a monument to our greatness!" Genesis 11:4 (NLT)

The people wanted to build a monument to their own greatness, exalting themselves above God and extending their tower far into heaven with the intent of usurping God's glory and authority. This desire of the human race did not end with the Tower of Babel. It continues to this day, and it will culminate in one final attempt to usurp the authority of God. This great rebellion will be launched from a place called Armageddon.

The Word of God and Armageddon

The scriptures are clear when it comes to the purpose of Armageddon. The human race will gather its armies at Armageddon in order to do battle with God Almighty:

"These miracle-working demons caused all the rulers of the world to gather for battle against the Lord on that great judgment day of God Almighty." Revelation 16:14 (NLT)

Three chapters later, we learn more about this gathering:

"Then I saw the beast gathering the kings of the earth and their armies in order to fight against the one sitting on the horse and his army." Revelation 19:19 (NLT)

The gathering at Armageddon is preparation for a war, a war the kings of the earth are plotting against "the one sitting on the horse and his army." Who is the "one sitting on the horse"? The one sitting on the horse is Jesus Christ.

The armies of the world do not gather to fight each other or to destroy the Jews (although destruction of the Jews is a primary aim of Satan and the Antichrist). Rather, the ultimate purpose of Armageddon is to emancipate the human race from God's authority. Psalm 2 describes this futile plan:

"Why do the nations rage? Why do the people waste their time with futile plans? The kings of the earth prepare for battle; the rulers plot together against the Lord and against His Anointed One. 'Let us break their chains,' they cry. 'And free ourselves from this slavery.' But the one who rules in heaven laughs. The Lord scoffs at them." Psalm 2:1-4 (NLT)

Notice who the rulers plot against. They don't plot against each other or Israel. They plot against "the Lord and His Anointed One." Who is "His Anointed One"? Jesus Christ. The armies of the world actually plot against the Prince of Peace Himself.

In describing the Antichrist, the Book of Daniel confirms this plot:

"From one of the prominent horns came a small horn whose power grew very great. It extended toward the south and east and toward the glorious land of Israel. His power reached to the heavens where it attacked the heavenly armies, throwing some of the heavenly beings and stars to the ground and trampling them. He even challenged the Commander of heaven's armies by canceling the daily sacrifices offered to him and by destroying his Temple." Daniel 8:9-11 (NLT)

Jesus Christ is the Commander of heaven's armies, and the Antichrist will have the brazen audacity to challenge Him. This concept is reiterated later in the same chapter:

"At the end of their rule, when their sin is at its height, a fierce king, a master of intrigue, will rise to power. He will become very strong, but not by his own power. He will cause a shocking amount of destruction and succeed in everything he does. He will destroy powerful leaders and devastate the holy people. He will be a master of deception, defeating many by catching them off guard. Without warning he will destroy them. He will even take on the Prince of princes in battle, but he will be broken, though not by human power." Daniel 8:23-25 (NLT)

This master of intrigue, the Antichrist, will take on the Prince of princes in battle. Like the Tower of Babel generation, his arrogance will extend all the way into the heavens, where he will attempt to usurp the glory and authority of God Himself. Note that the last verse of this passage states that the power of the Antichrist will not be broken by humans. This illustrates once again that the Antichrist will be the undisputed world power of his time. No one will be able to make war against him. At least no human will be able to make war against him. When the Antichrist engages the Lord Jesus Christ in battle, he will be utterly destroyed.

The Book of Joel provides us with a glimpse of this future time, when the armies of the world will gather to make war with Christ. The human race will severely overestimate its own power, while Jesus Christ tread the winepress of His fierce wrath:

"Say to the nations far and wide: 'Get ready for war! Call out your best warriors! Let all your fighting men advance for the attack! Beat your plowshares into swords and your pruning hooks into spears. Train even your weaklings to be warriors. Come quickly, all you nations everywhere! Gather together in the valley.' And now, O Lord, call out your warriors! 'Let the nations be called to arms. Let them march to the valley of Jehoshaphat. There I, the Lord, will sit to pronounce judgment on them all. Now let the sickle do its work, for the harvest is ripe. Come, tread the winepress because it is full. The storage vats are overflowing with the wickedness of these people.'" Joel 3:9-13 (NLT)

The End Result of Armageddon

The end result of Armageddon is not quite what the Antichrist and his minions have in mind. The Book of Revelation describes their total destruction at the hands of Jesus Christ, with a valley of dead bodies laid out as a feast for the birds of the world. The beast and the false prophet are captured, and both are thrown into the lake of fire where they will experience everlasting torment:

"Then I saw the beast gathering the kings of the earth and their armies in order to fight against the one sitting on the horse and his army. And the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who did mighty miracles on behalf of the beast - miracles that deceived all who had accepted the mark of the beast and who worshipped his statue. Both the beast and his false prophet were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur. Their entire army was killed by the sharp sword that came out of the mouth of the one riding the white horse. And all the vultures of the sky gorged themselves on the dead bodies." Revelation 19:19-21 (NLT)

The victory of Christ during the campaign of Armageddon will usher in the Millennial Kingdom, a time of unprecedented peace and tranquility on earth with God dwelling among men. Jesus Christ Himself will rule the nations, and those who have placed their trust in Him will experience all the blessings God has reserved for them.

Conclusion

Armageddon is a reminder of what the human race is like without Christ. Burdened by our sinful nature, God gave the free gift of salvation through His Son Jesus Christ. All we have to do is accept this gift. But those who reject it will become slaves to sin, and their degeneracy will one day culminate in outright physical rebellion against God Himself.

Armageddon isn't about asteroids or comets. It's not about nuclear annihilation or war between nations. It's about mankind's fruitless rebellion against God. In a pop culture which has managed to skew and blur the truth about Armageddon, Christians have a prime opportunity to set the record straight. So the next time someone you know mentions Armageddon, ask them what they mean. If it's not in line with what the bible says, take the time to share the scriptural account with them. But more importantly, tell them about the wonderful gift of Jesus Christ.

Wondering Who You Are?

Everybody is trying to understand who they are today. They are "looking for themselves". Millions of dollars have been spent on improving ones self image. There are conferences held with guest speakers making speeches for days on how a person can feel better about themselves. I have found the secret to good self esteem and it did not cost any money. However, it does cost something. It cost devotion, self discipline, and commitment to live the life of an overcomer, a self confident person, a person who really knows who they are. Interested? If you are willing to really be devoted, disciplined, and committed you too can become who God says you are.

Crib Guard

I am complete in Him Who is the Head of all principality and power (Colossians 2:10).

Crib Guard

"and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority."

I am alive with Christ (Ephesians 2:5).

"made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved."

I am free from the law of sin and death (Romans 8:2).

"because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death."

I am far from oppression, and fear does not come near me (Isaiah 54:14).

"In righteousness you will be established: Tyranny will be far from you; you will have nothing to fear. Terror will be far removed; it will not come near you."

I am born of God, and the evil one does not touch me (I John 5:18).

"We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the one who was born of God keeps him safe, and the evil one cannot harm him."

I am holy and without blame before Him in love (I Peter 1:16; Ephesians 1:4).

"for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."

"For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight."

I have the mind of Christ (Philippians 2:5; I Corinthians 2:16).

"Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?"[a] But we have the mind of Christ."

I have the peace of God that passes all understanding (Philippians 4:7).

"And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

I have the Greater One living in me; greater is He Who is in me than he who is in the world (I John 4:4).

"You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world."

I have received the gift of righteousness and reign as a king in life by Jesus Christ (Romans 5:17).

"For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ."

I have received the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Jesus, the eyes of my understanding being enlightened (Ephesians 1:17,18).

17 "I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit[a] of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. 18 I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,"

I have received the power of the Holy Spirit to lay hands on the sick and see them recover, to cast out demons, to speak with new tongues. I have power over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means harm me (Mark 16:17,18; Luke 10:17,19).

17 "And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well."
17 "The seventy-two returned with joy and said, "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name."

19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you."

I have put off the old man and have put on the new man, which is renewed in the knowledge after the image of Him Who created me (Colossians 3:9,10).

9 "Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices

10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator."

I have given, and it is given to me; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, men give into my bosom (Luke 6:38).

"Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."

I have no lack for my God supplies all of my need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19).

"And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus."

I can quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one with my shield of faith (Ephesians 6:16).

"In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one."

I can do all things through Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:13).

"I can do everything through him who gives me strength."

I shall do even greater works than Christ Jesus (John 14:12).

"I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father."

I show forth the praises of God Who has called me out of darkness into His marvelous light (I Peter 2:9).

"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light."

I am God's child - for I am born again of the incorruptible seed of the Word of God, which lives and abides forever (I Peter 1:23).

"For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God."

I am God's workmanship, created in Christ unto good works (Ephesians 2:10).

"For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."

I am a new creature in Christ (II Corinthians 5:17).

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!"

I am a spirit being - alive to God (I Thessalonians 5:23; Romans 6:11).

"May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus."

I am a believer, and the light of the Gospel shines in my mind (II Corinthians 4:4).

"The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 25But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it--he will be blessed in what he does."

I am a doer of the Word and blessed in my actions (James 1:22,25).

"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says 25 But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it--he will be blessed in what he does."

I am a joint-heir with Christ (Romans 8:17).

"Now if we are children, then we are heirs--heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory."

I am more than a conqueror through Him Who loves me (Romans 8:37).

"No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us."

I am an overcomer by the blood of the Lamb and the word of my testimony (Revelation 12:11).

"They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death."

I am a partaker of His divine nature (II Peter 1:3,4).

"His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires."

I am an ambassador for Christ (II Corinthians 5:20).

"We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God."

I am part of a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a purchased people (I Peter 2:9).

"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light."

I am the righteousness of God in Jesus Christ (II Corinthians 5:21).

"God made him who had no sin to be sin[a] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God."

I am the temple of the Holy Spirit; I am not my own (I Corinthians 6:19).

"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;"

I am the head and not the tail; I am above only and not beneath (Deuteronomy 28:13).

"The LORD will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the LORD your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom."

I am the light of the world (Matthew 5:14).

"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden."

I am His elect, full of mercy, kindness, humility, and longsuffering (Romans 8:33; Colossians 3:12).

"Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies.
Colossians 3:12 Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience."

I am forgiven of all my sins and washed in the Blood (Ephesians 1:7).

"In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace."

I am delivered from the power of darkness and translated into God's kingdom (Colossians 1:13).

"For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves,"

I am redeemed from the curse of sin, sickness, and poverty (Galatians 3:13; Deuteronomy 28:15-19).

13"Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree."
16 You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country.

17 Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed.

18 The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land, and the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks.

19 You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out."

I am firmly rooted, built up, established in my faith and overflowing with gratitude (Colossians 2:7).

"...rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness."

I am called of God to be the voice of His praise (II Timothy 1:9; Psalm 66:8).

II Timothy 1:9 .."who has saved us and called us to a holy life--not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time,
Psalm 66:8 Praise our God, O peoples, let the sound of his praise be heard;"

I am healed by the stripes of Jesus (I Peter 2:24; Isaiah 53:5).

I Peter 2:24 "He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed."
Isaiah 53:5" But he was pierced for our transgressions he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed."

I am raised up with Christ and seated in heavenly places (Colossians 2:12; Ephesians 2:6).

Col.2:12 "having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.
Ephesians 2:6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,"

I am greatly loved by God (Colossians 3:12; Romans 1:7; I Thessalonians 1:4; Ephesians 2:4).

Colossians 3:12 "Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
Romans 1:7 To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
I Thessalonians 1;4 For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you,
Ephesians 2:4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,"

I am strengthened with all might according to His glorious power (Colossians 1:11).

" being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience,"

I am submitted to God, and the devil flees from me because I resist him in the Name of Jesus (James 4:7).

"Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."

I press on toward the goal to win the prize to which God in Christ Jesus is calling us upward (Philippians 3:14).

"I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."

I do not have a spirit of fear; but of power, love, and a sound mind (II Timothy 1:7).

"For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline."

It is not I who live, but Christ lives in me (Galatians 2:20).

"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."

Ways to Protect Your Child from Bunk Bed Accidents and Injury At Home

Bunk beds are frequently used as a child's first regular bed after the child outgrows a crib. Some bunk beds also are used separately as twin beds for older children and even adults. Every year, thousands of children receive treatment for injuries associated with bunk beds. Most of these injuries are fairly minor and occur when children fall from the beds. But there are other less obvious yet potentially very serious hazards associated with bunk bed structures that have entrapped children and resulted in suffocation or deaths.

Crib Guard

1. Head Entrapment under Bunk Bed Guard Rails.

Crib Guard

This can cause death to young children. To reduce the risk of your child slipping feet first into the space between the lower edge of a guardrail and the top surface of the mattress never allow children under 6 years-old on the upper bunk. Also close the space between the lower edge of the guardrail and upper edge of the bed frame to 3-1/2 inches or less.

2. Falling Mattresses or Foundations Can Cause Injury or Even Kill A Small Child.

Mattresses or foundations resting only on ledges need cross wires, or other means of support to help prevent dislodgement, even when beds are not stacked. Securely fasten supports to ledges of both beds with screws or bolts. Supports can be provided by wood slats, metal straps or sturdy wires. Be sure crossties are under the mattress foundation of each bed and that they are secured in place even if bunks are used as twin beds. Fasten additional cross ties underneath the mattress foundation of both beds.

3. Using the Wrong Size Mattress Can Cause Injury or Even Death

Strangulation deaths can occur if a child falls through an opening created between the mattress and headboard or footboard when a regular length mattress is used in an extra long bed frame. Choose a mattress that correctly fits your bed.

4. Use of the Bed without Rails on Both Sides

Death or injury may occur if a very young child rolls off the bed and becomes entrapped between the wall and the side of the bed not having a guardrail. This hazard is not unique to bunk beds. Regular beds can present the same hazard. Always use two side guardrails on the upper bunk. Keep guardrails securely in place at all times no matter what the age of the child. Children move about during sleep and may roll out of bed.

5. Playing Around Bed Furniture Frequently Contributes To Accidents.

Teach children that rough play is unsafe around and on beds and other furniture. Emphasize to children to use the ladder and not chairs or other pieces of furniture to climb into or out of the top bunk.

6. Metal Bunk Beds

To help avoid bunk bed collapse, inspect all mattress support fin tabs and pockets for breaks or cracks in the metal and welds. The fin tabs are inserted into pockets located near each of the bed's eight corners. Stop using damaged beds as bunks and contact the manufacturer or importer for repair or replacement.

An Answer To The Problem Of Evil - If God Is Good, Why So Much Evil?

"Look, don't give me such rubbish - in one breath you tell me God is all powerful and merciful, holding the universe together, counting the hairs on our heads, and knowing when a sparrow falls to the ground, and then you admit millions of people are starving, families washed away by tsunamis, blasted by cyclones, children and pregnant women crushed under rubble in earthquakes and buried in mudslides. So, now I've heard it all, and I'm angry that nothing about a God of love makes sense!"

Crib Guard

Yes, there is little doubt that for many serious people, "the problem of evil", as it is often called, presents an insurmountable obstacle to accept the love of God. So, is there an answer at all? Do we heap up a pile of abstruse philosophical meanderings over the problem? No - no one really needs that sort of "help".
Instead, here are three propositions, each based on the truths of Scripture, without which there is no answer:

Crib Guard

ONE: GOD IS FAR BETTER THAN WE CAN COMPREHEND: God, the living, Personal God who has revealed himself in the Bible is perfectly, eternally good in all his perfections, his purposes and his way of dealing with evil, and he is infinite in power. He did not instigate the open rebellion of Satan; God has not been caught off guard; Satan is personally responsible, and will pay in judgement.

TWO: EVIL IS MORE SERIOUS THAN YOU EVER THOUGHT: but it is an abnormal state and one day it will all be sorted. Satan, the heavenly being who started the original rebellion against God will soon pay eternally for his anarchy. Evil has spoiled humanity and the world - it is all now under the just sentence of bondage to corruption.

And awful things do happen; you are right. Why do we think bad things are awful? Because we have been created with a moral sense of right and wrong. We definitely don't like terrible things happening. Yes, they really are terrible, and remind us that the Fall in Genesis and its continuing effects are also terrible. We have inherited morally fallen natures and a seriously spoiled world - don't underestimate the serious nature of it.

What we call "accidents" do happen. Things like when a tower fell on people crushing them to death that Jesus used as a lesson to warn people, that those who were crushed were not worse than anyone else, and that we all must repent (see New Testament, Luke 13:4-5). So, you too must turn away from thinking you're entitled to call God to account for the failure to control his world!

THREE: THE WORST INJUSTICE HAS ALREADY HAPPENED TO THE BEST PERSON: So, you reckon all the bad things that happen call God's love and goodness into question, as if he must be blamed for it all? If you do, you're making an appalling misjudgement. In fact, God has been amazingly lenient, for he could have consigned all to eternal judgement. That would vindicate his justice and uphold his moral integrity for ever.

But, instead he did something else that you need to consider. God, in the person of his eternal Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, came on a rescue mission to rescue the undeserving rebels. To do this he willingly exposed himself to the worst thing that has ever happened - the murderous, crucifixion of the sinless Son of God, the Creator of all things, by some of the rebels! Jesus gave himself in loving humility to endure the full penalty of our rebellion. This is the greatest proof of his grace - his totally undeserved favour.

The worst injustice has already happened to the Son of God, when he died upon the cross! The greatest love has already been demonstrated, when Christ, the Son whom the Father loves, gave himself up into the condemnation that his enemies deserved. He paid the price they deserved! Out of the riches of his mercy and love, he used their vile deed against himself (for which those involved were wholly responsible) to accomplish his purpose.

God immersed himself into the centre of the "problem of evil" in order to set the record straight and to begin his perfect new creation - he began that with raising Jesus from the dead, eternally incorruptible. He has already turned the worst injustice into the most morally perfect vindication - Jesus is alive for evermore!

Now, I hope you are left with your apparently insurmountable objection to the injustice of why such bad things happen completely collapsed before the vastly greater evidences of the justice, goodness and mercy of God. Now, with all respect, your old arguments really don't have a leg to stand on. Besides, all outstanding issues, and there are many, will be settled on Judgement Day.

In consequence, I suggest the only reasonable thing for you to do is to throw out your false verdict, and accept God's verdict. That all who turn from their "misjudgements" and sin and put confident trust in Christ receive full forgiveness; they receive the final verdict of being justified freely by his grace as a gift.
In light of this, the "problem of evil" becomes the "solution of the Saviour". And such astonishing grace for such rebels as we is the far greater wonder than all of the bad things put together in the whole of time!

Materials Used in Organic Crib Mattresses

Organic crib mattresses are commonly made of cotton on both the inside and outside, but other materials are used, as well. The purpose of an organic crib mattress for a baby is to make the environment free of chemicals. With cotton in particular, a long list of synthetic pesticides are used in growing the plant and making fabric, but cotton isn't the only material in a mattress that uses chemicals. Most baby mattresses have some kind of leak guard or mattress pad, and this material is often made from PVC or another synthetic rubber-like material using phthalates or plasticizers. Options for replacing PVC and vinyl include organic rubber or food-grade polyethylene. Whether natural or organic, either material, when incorporated into organic crib mattresses, uses fewer chemicals but is just as effective in guarding against leaks.

Crib Guard

Organic rubber is one material used for many organic crib mattresses. This material typically comes from rubber trees in Malaysia and forms the core of various baby mattresses, with one of the more prominent brands of rubber organic crib mattresses being Pure Rest. While soda ash is added to the rubber mixture to give it a more porous texture, the rubber itself protects against leaks, as well as any parasites or bed bugs that can find their way into a child's mattress.

Crib Guard

But, as rubber mattresses run slightly higher in price than organic cotton, leak protection for cotton crib mattresses is often done by another material. While PVC or vinyl is used as a leak guard in these instances, food-grade polyethylene is incorporated instead. Although not an organic material, food-grade polyethylene falls under the category of "natural."

Organic or natural wool is another material found in various organic crib mattresses. Whether a cotton or a rubber mattress, organic wool is often used for its fire retardant properties. While an ordinary cotton or rubber mattress may be treated with chemicals to be fire retardant, the natural properties of wool allow it to act as a barrier instead.

As the purpose of organic crib mattresses is creating a chemical-free product, makers like Naturepedic and Pure Rest, as well as others, get creative when designing a natural or organic product. But, regardless of whether the mattress core or organic cotton or rubber, all parts of one of these organic mattresses come from organically-grown or natural sources.

You may want to shop for baby clothing and accessories well in advance. Preferably, you should start shopping for baby clothing and accessories about two months before you expect the baby to arrive. Crib Guard

If you are the expectant mother, you may want see to it that everything is in place a couple of months before you give birth. Many new parents tend to gather most of their needs for the baby as they go through the pregancy. Nine months to an expectant mother seems to go along rather slowly especially more so towards the latter months, this is to be expected as the mother to be gets larger as her baby grows and she can become more easily tired therefore if most of your shopping can done in the early stages of your third trimester then there are only the incidentals to shop for towards the heavier months. Preparation for the new arrival is vital as time can fly and it is never good to be caught off guard.

Crib Guard

Another reason for preparing earlier is the avoidance of Stress. Stress is of no advantage to either the mum to be or her baby so to avoid this prepare early and then enjoy this wonderful miracle that is about to happen. Even if this is your second, third, fourth or more baby it is unique every time, just as special and truly a miracle.

Getting the Right Baby Clothing and Accessories

Although there are some women who would not want the ultrasound to determine the gender of their baby, there are many women who would like to have one for practical purposes. Most women have ultrasounds to determine the health and position of the baby in the womb and to assure not only the parents-to-be that all is okay but the doctors and nurses usually like to know these things as well. So, with that in mind, to choose the right accessories it may well be desirable to know the gender of your baby.

Remember when choosing your babies accessories that your baby will grow and in time you will have a toddler then a child who will also be needing a room etc. So therefore, it can be advisable to choose with that in mind then your baby can grow with your theme thereby making your life much more enjoyable and easy. Of course if this is your second or third or more baby then you already have the ideas and know what works and what does not. When choosing any baby equipment, clothing or accessories, the first priority is always safety; then function, then design and finally color and fabric if required. You have nine months to just on ten months to plan so shop around and most of all enjoy the experience. A sun hat if it's very hot and sunny.

Prayer and Holy Water - The Reason and the Force Behind Them

Will prayer and holy water work for you? I have asked myself the same question so many times in the past, that I got tired of asking. I simply went for it many years ago, and I 'let the chips fall where they may.' When you have some belief, or absolutely no belief in prayer and holy water, that's okay! I had to develop my belief in both by the process of 'walking on faith and not by sight'-- to paraphrase the words of the apostle St. Paul. Others may be coming to terms with their religion of birth; or are currently in the process of finding themselves through meditation and spirituality; and perhaps the use of prayer, and especially holy water, is a new concept. Hopefully, this article will bring to light a new perspective on both subjects which may serve you in your life.

Crib Guard

Belief in praying just doesn't come over night; but in due course it will manifest itself through your actions, and by the results that you will obtain. Prayers alone will require your devotion to them on a regular basis. With holy water your objective is to try it out. Your belief in its inherent power to heal, bless and to protect will become clear over a period of time. Your faith in holy water will grow to the point that you will discuss it with family and friends; and confidently never fail to use it for the blessing and the safeguarding of your loved ones--even your house, your pets and the vehicles that you drive, if you want to.

Crib Guard

I always say that life is not to be played around with, and especially when children are involved. We want to take care of them and watch over them as much as possible; but sometimes we can't always be there for them at every second of the day. Our best alternative is to hand them over to God for his safekeeping; while they live their lives from infancy, and right on to old age.

Just the other day, I was walking back to my Explorer after getting a coffee at Starbucks near where I live. I thought I saw my trunk door wide open, but it turned out to be the SUV next to mine in the parking lot. I greeted the lady owner, who happened to be loading the trunk of her SUV with groceries from the supermarket. She had a little girl with her; and when I looked at her she appeared not to be feeling well. I found the little girl a bit sad, but maybe because it was still early in the morning. I asked her mom, who appeared friendly and talkative. She went on to explain to me that her youngest daughter--the little girl's sister--had just recently passed away. I asked how old was the girl, and she said nineteen months-old. Just a baby!

The tiny tot crawled to the swimming pool, right from the family room where she was left sitting on a sofa, and the gate was open on the guard-fence. In that short span of time, while her mom was retrieving the groceries from her SUV, the child was gone forever. She drowned, and no one could bring her back to life. That precious child became an organ donor to three families. Her very short life was not lived in vain.

1) Why do we need to pray?

My story of the infant is a very sad but true incident. We pray so that we allow for God to take over our lives, and especially that of our loved ones. We simply can't control all events, elements, and those tragic moments that can easily occur in a flash. God is the only one that can provide divine intervention to save a life. We also pray so that parents who lose their children can find solace in knowing that their loved ones are now in the arms of God.

People sometimes take the attitude that: "What the heck, we're going to die anyway someday!" Yes, that's true, but I don't see too many people rushing to get to heaven! We know it is paradise, according to the Scriptures, but living on Earth is also paradise, if we choose to make it so. A life is such a short-term event, that even if we can live to be one hundred years-old, it's still not long enough for some people, especially if they are having a wonderful time. It's the body that gives up functioning, either from disease or old age, not the spirit. No one wants to go prematurely, so we pray for health, a happy life, and a long life.

You may be someone who truly doesn't believe in praying; and you probably have no notion of what holy water can do for you. Then let me help you with more facts and events on the magnificent powers of prayer and holy water.

2) Why it is important to sprinkle holy water on people and personal vehicles

My youngest son was on I95, a major highway that extends the entire East Coast of the U.S. It is one of the busiest highways, and most dangerous also, especially when it rains. A few months back while he was driving his Jeep Cherokee back from work one evening, a tire blew up, and his truck careened across the highway totally out-of-control. It was a rainy night. One car driving at 70 mph avoided hitting him, and that car went off the highway into a ravine, and it flipped over a few times before landing upside down. Another vehicle was able to slow down and still hit the Jeep, but with less force and impact. My son survived the accident, and so did the other parties. His Jeep was blessed with holy water a few years back; and I bless him via his photo on my laptop every day by signing the cross over his face with holy water.

3) The effective use of holy water for injuries--even for the eyes

I mountain bike regularly, and last month I got into a serious spin right on the trail. I went flying in mid-air onto bushes, rocks, small tree branches and lake water. Anything lives in those waters; including moccasin snakes, alligators, iguanas, and other critters. No one was around to help me out. I extricated myself from the spot that I was tangled in, and got right back on the trail. It took me a good thirty minutes to do so. When I returned to my Explorer, my left eye was red as a cherry. I must have poked it with a branch. For the next seven days I tried washing it with running water, using eye drops and putting antibiotic cream. Every thing that I tried putting on irritated my eye, and nothing seemed to work. I was also beginning to get severe headaches; probably from straining my eyes. By the eight day, I resorted to my 'holy water treatment' and the eye cured itself in exactly three days of its use. Now, when my eyes are tired, I place holy water on the eyelids, and not inside the eye. Remember, dab holy water on the upper and lower eyelids of both eyes, whenever you need to.

4) Praying and waiting for answers. How long does it take?

We all pray and wait for answers, and sometimes we get frustrated for lack of success. In fact, many despair and forget to follow-up with their prayers. I have prayed for many requests in my life, and few have ever been answered. Why is that? Maybe the requests weren't that urgent or important, but I made them anyway. Other times, I have prayed for something, only to get my answer weeks, and sometimes months later.

I have compared prayers answered to a faucet which is slowly opened in heaven; and one drop after another painful drop falls onto a glass. Days and weeks may go by and we see no results at all. And then one day, the glass is full of water, meaning: the prayer has been answered. Where is the petitioner when prayers are answered? He is no longer around, for he has given up on prayer; saying out-loud, prayer just doesn't work for me! So he goes thirsty; in the meanwhile, the glass is brimming with water and he's holding it right in his hand.

God is the only one that controls the flow of the water, and only He holds the 'handle to the faucet.' It is His will that measures the speed that the water will pour from the faucet onto the waiting glass of the petitioner. Our job is to be patient and wait faithfully. Here is where faith in God goes a long, long way.

I know that this explanation might seem very simplistic to many--or even dumb for that matter; but to me it explains many questions in my mind. Believing that prayers are answered is one of our greatest struggles in life. I know, for I went through a lot of praying to come to the conclusion that they are in fact answered, but not according to our timing, but instead to God's own schedule. We can't rush Him, and neither can we push Him. That's why He is God!

5) The reason and the force behind prayer and holy water

Does God determine the day and the hour that we will die? You may want to ask this question of clergy, and see what the correct answer is. I prefer to believe that God leaves that issue alone; and instead, He allows the natural course of events and unknown circumstances here on Earth to determine the time of our death.

I also believe that God knows everything about us at all moments of the day and night. However, I feel that although He knows when we are going to die, He doesn't point His finger at anyone individually on a day to day basis, and says, "All right, today is your day, tomorrow is going to be yours, and this is the way that it will be done." Many people would agree with that statement, including clergy that I know in my church, but I certainly don't.

I think that God leaves us alone to live our lives; therefore, leaving us subject to the risks and the dangers of the natural elements, e.g., thunderstorms, rain, snow, and many other extraordinary possibilities that we face every day. It is the inherent price that we pay for being members of the human race. No ifs, ands or buts about it!

Give you an example: not too long ago a neighbor of mine mentioned to me the recent accidental death of a doctor friend of hers crossing Brickell Ave. in Miami, Florida. He was going to lunch with his other doctor friends; and he happened to step first onto the pedestrian crosswalk. He was struck by a pick-up truck that missed the red light; and the driver hit him with full force and at high speed. The doctor might have looked to his left before crossing, but he failed to anticipate the incoming truck not stopping at all. The doctor was killed instantly.

I mentioned the incident with the nineteen month-old infant for a reason. Absolutely no one was around and available to save her life at the moment that she fell in the pool. Sadly, her parents will have to live through that tragedy for the rest of their lives. But I feel the pain more deeply for the mother, who will forever think that she could have done something to save her child's life; either by having been more careful or watchful.

Here's my point: If, like some people believe, God determines the day and the hour that we will die--by whatever method He chooses our death--is it fair that an innocent baby dies by accident, and then be literally taken away from her parents, knowing full well the horrible loss and unbearable pain that her death would bring to the family? Would God do this on purpose? Why, in order to avoid that child further pain later on in her life--had the drowning never occurred?

What about the doctor who was killed by the truck? He was forty years-old, and at the prime of his life and career, married with family. I don't think that God can be so cruel to have taken his life; and not be concerned and feel compassion for his family of the terrible grief and sorrow that this act would rein upon them! Did God design the fatal accident by making the doctor alone cross the street ahead of his colleagues?

We are taught to believe that God is a God of love; and by being cruel, unfair and unjust to His children, He is not the God that I have lived all these years to believe in. On the other hand, if God leaves all of His children to chance, and to face life with all its elements--which is what I prefer to believe in; then we need to pray to Him to give us protection, because in reality we have no one else with the power to do it for us. He is the One that can intervene to save a life, and only if He wishes to do so. Therein lies the reason and the force behind prayer and holy water. We didn't create these two elements--they were created by God for us to be used at our liberty.

The reason for using prayer is to open and maintain a line of communication with our creator, and that's God. That line is there for us to ask Him to spare a life, our own if needed, protect the children from accidents, cure the sick, and bring relief when we are feeling down. The force behind it is in our degree of conviction, faith and commitment to stick with our petitions; and not walk away while the prayer or prayers are in the process of being considered.

Are prayers answered after all? Yes, definitely, all prayers are answered with a Yes, No, or Later! I know this for a fact because I have made hundreds of petitions over the years praying to God, and few of my prayers have ever been answered. However, allow me to clarify myself; the prayers that were indeed answered were the most important ones of all. The rest didn't really matter, because they were either deemed irrelevant, or I just forgot what I asked for. Perhaps heaven did the same also, probably for my own benefit.

It is of major importance that we don't underestimate the power of prayer to deliver, and for holy water to produce results. I have discussed this subject many times in my previous articles, and it is critical that we ask God to take care of us; but most importantly, our loved ones. God hears, and God delivers. Holy water will not be wasted on you and your loved ones if you decide to use it. Believe in the force and the power behind prayers; and have faith that holy water does what it is intended to do, and that is: to bless, to heal and to protect you and your loved ones, while you and they go about your daily lives.

Many older cribs, including the one that was used for you or your younger children, do not meet all current safety standards. Even if you are on a tight budget, you should not purchase an old crib at a garage sale or accept a hand-me-down that does not meet the following guidelines: Tips for Selecting Product Infants should ALWAYS sleep in a crib, which meets current Federal and ASTM standards. The crib mattress should fit snugly with no more than two fingers width, one-inch, between the edge of the mattress and the crib side. Otherwise, the baby can get trapped between the mattress and the side of the crib. No pillow-like bumpers. Look for the JPMA Certification Seal. Tips for Use Remember to ALWAYS keep the drop side up when the baby is in the crib. NEVER place the crib near windows, draperies, blinds, or wall mounted decorative accessories with long cords. Make sure there are no missing, loose, broken, or improperly installed screws, brackets or other hardware on the crib or the mattress support.
